Award-winning star of stage and screen Jonathan Groff is set to appear in the new season of “Doctor Who,” which is coming to Disney+ this fall, in a key guest-starring role.
The Details
The BBC, which is filming the series, is keeping details about Groff’s character a mystery for now, but recently released images show him dressed in Victorian-style clothing accompanied by the new doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, and Millie Gibson, who is playing companion Ruby Sunday.
Of the Groff casting news, showrunner Russell T Davies said, “This is an incredible coup, and a great honour, to get such a huge star striding on to our set. So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!”
Groff was equally excited about joining the series, saying, “I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!”

The Series
Starting in November 2023, Disney+ will air new episodes of the series in all territories outside of the UK and Ireland, where the BBC will still retain rights to air the show.
David Tennant, who played the Tenth Doctor in the early-2000’s, returns to play the Fourteenth Doctor is a trio of specials before Ncuti Gatwa becomes the Fifteenth Doctor.
Other new confirmed cast members for the upcoming season include Yasmin Finney and Neil Patrick Harris, playing undisclosed roles, and Jinkx Monsoon playing the Doctor’s unnamed nemesis.
“Doctor Who” began in 1963 on the BBC in the UK, which means the November 2023 start date of the upcoming season also coincides with the show’s 60th anniversary.
