Disney Picks Questlove to Direct ‘The Aristocats’

Disney has announced that Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the Oscar-winning director of musical documentary “Summer of Soul,” will be directing the studio’s upcoming remake of “The Aristocats.”

The Details

Questlove will not only be directing the remake, but he will also be executive producing and overseeing music for the film.

A founding member of musical group The Roots, and musical director on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” Questlove received acclaim when he pivoted to directing “Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised),” about the untold story of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. A joint production between Searchlight Pictures and Hulu’s Onyx Collective, it won many accolades, including the Academy Award for best documentary.

About the Film

The remake of the Disney classic is a hybrid film that will combine live-action with computer-generated animation. No release date has been given yet.

The original “The Aristocats” was released in 1970, and centers on a family of pampered felines who live in Paris, and are expecting to soon inherit a massive fortune.

But when their owner’s jealous butler learns of their inheritance, mother Duchess and her three kittens Berlioz, Marie, and Toulouse, are forced to team up with a smooth-talking alleycat named Thomas O’Malley to reclaim their riches.

“Peter Rabbit” filmmaker Will Gluck and Pixar’s “Onward” writer Keith Bunin are adapting the screenplay.

Tarik Trotter, Shawn Gee and Zarah Zohlman will also exec produce this film on behalf of Two One Five Entertainment.

The original film is available to stream on Disney+.
