Disney+ Reveals Debut Date and Trailer for ‘American Born Chinese’ Series

American Born Chinese

Disney+ has revealed the debut date for it’s upcoming American Born Chinese series, along with a new trailer for the show.

Why will you be wanting to watch this series? Read on…

The Series

American Born Chinese, from filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty), and based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, focuses on American teen Jin Wang (played by Ben Wang), whose parents immigrated from Taiwan. He is struggling to carve out exactly who he’s supposed to be, socially and culturally.

This is complicated by his aunt Guanyin (Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh), who is actually the all-powerful Buddhist bodhisattva (goddess) of Compassion.

American Born Chinese

When Jin meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as he is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.

The cast also includes Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Jim Liu, and Sydney Taylor.

This is a reunion for Yeoh and Quan, who both won Oscars this weekend for Everything Everywhere All At Once. Their co-star Stephanie Hsu will be guesting on this series, as well.

The series was first announced a year ago at the TCA Winter 2022 event, and most recently appeared on the Disney+ 2023 sizzle reel.

American Born Chinese will debut on Disney+ on May 24, 2023.

The Trailer

In this new trailer, we meet Guanyin (Yeoh) and see her in mystical action, including several fight scenes. It sets the tone for what to expect in the series.
