The Springbok herd at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge welcomed a new arrival last week, and the baby is being well cared for.
About Springboks
The springbok is a medium-sized antelope found mainly in south and southwest Africa, and is the national animal of the country of South Africa.
This animal feeds on shrubs and succulents, and can live without drinking water for years, meeting its requirements through eating succulent vegetation.
It is also known for “pronking,” a movement where the springbok makes multiple straight leg leaps in the air.
The Baby
According to Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President, Disney’s Animals, Science & Environment, the baby springbok has been spending time at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
There, animal care Cast Members like Dr. Jen (in blue above) and hospital keeper Jen (in green below), offered the newborn careful attention and kept her fed every four hours.
She doesn’t have a name yet, but she seems to be thriving…and she’s very affectionate.
Guests can spot springbok at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, and while riding Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. No word on when this new addition to the herd will make her public debut.
Walt Disney World also welcomed an addax calf to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge earlier this month.
