Marvel’s upcoming “Werewolf By Night” special on Disney+ has been a mysterious project, especially to those who aren’t comic fans, so a new featurette has been released that sheds a little more light on the show.
About the Show
At first glance, “Werewolf by Night” may seem like a slightly scary Marvel contribution to Disney’s Halloween catalog, but it’s so much more than that.
Inspired by the classic horror films of the 1930s and 1940s, the special takes place on a a dark and somber night, where a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the foreboding Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader.
In a strange and macabre memorial to the leader’s life, the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic—a hunt that will ultimately bring them face to face with a dangerous monster.
“Werewolf by Night” is directed by Michael Giacchino, and stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Laura Donnelly and Harriet Sansom Harris.
The Featurette
This new look at “Werewolf by Night” includes interviews with Giacchino, and the stars of the special, as they explain the concept and story they are telling…without giving anything away.
Take a look:
Looking to the Future
In the featurette, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says, “We’re introducing a world that will ultimately become quite important to the future of the MCU.”
To those who know the history of the show’s title character, that is a very exciting statement.
The “Werewolf by Night” character originally appeared in the Marvel Spotlight #2 (February 1972) comic, and was based on an idea by Roy Thomas. The name was suggested by Marvel/Disney legend Stan Lee.
During the day, Jack Russell appears as a man, but when the sun sets and the moon rises, he becomes Werewolf by Night.
So how does a character like this feature into the future of the MCU?
In the comics, Werewolf by Night is the first introduction to Moon Knight (“Werewolf by Night” issue #32 in August 1975), which inspired a series starring Oscar Isaac that recently concluded its first season on Disney+
Being a supernatural being, Russell also has interactions with Doctor Strange, which leads to the introduction of a new supergroup of heroes called the Midnight Sons.
This group also includes characters like Blade (who has already been introduced into the MCU), Ghost Rider (who had two movies with Nicolas Cage pre-MCU, and who also appeared in the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and Morbius (who featured in a recent Sony film, as the character is part of the Spider-Man universe).
So it’s quite possible Feige’s statement in the featurette refers to the future introduction of the Midnight Sons into the MCU.
I guess we’ll see as Feige unspools his grand plan in future phases of the MCU.
