The “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series at Disney+ has announced it has just started production after casting the roles of five of the adult characters.
Megan Mullally, Timm Sharp, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, and Virginia Kull are set to appear in recurring guest star roles in the small screen adaptation of the popular Rick Riordan book series.
The Actors and Their Characters:
Mullally will play Alecto/Mrs. Dodds. Mrs. Dodds is Percy’s strict, irascible math teacher who also happens to be one of the three Furies, known as Alecto, who loyally serve Hades, the god of the underworld. She is best known as Karen from the series “Will & Grace.”
Sharp will play Gabe Ugliano, Sally’s selfish, brash, and combative husband, who happens to be Percy’s stepfather. Sharp has appeared in “Enlightened,” “Blunt Talk,” and “On the Verge.”
Turman will play Chiron/Mr. Brunner. Disguised as Percy’s Latin teacher Mr. Brunner, Chiron is the famed centaur and trainer of heroes who provides Percy with moral guidance when needed. Turman has appeared in “The Wire,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Mantzoukas will play Dionysus/Mr. D. The irritable and sarcastic god Dionysus, known as Mr. D to the kids, runs Camp Half Blood, the camp for the demigods. Mantzoukas has appeared in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” and “The Good Place.”
Kull will appear as Sally Jackson, Percy’s loving, protective and selfless mother, who has raised her son knowing that one day she’ll have to give him up to the dangerous world of the Olympian gods. Kull has appeared in “NOS4A2,” and “Big Little Lies.”
These five join previously announced series lead Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, as well as recently announced co-stars Aryan Simhadri (Grover Underwood) and Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth Chase).
The Series:
Based on Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.
With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.
A Disney Branded Television series produced by 20th Television, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” was first announced in January of this year, and has started production in Vancouver for a 2023 debut on Disney+.
Riordan and Jon Steinberg will serve as writers of the pilot, and James Bobin will direct.
