Yesterday was a big news day for Star Wars fans as the “Star Wars Celebration” (SWC) convention kicked off in Anaheim. Among the reveals was a premiere date and first teaser trailer for the upcoming “Andor” series on Disney+.
The series is a prequel to the movie “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and it centers on the character of Cassian Andor, once again played by actor Diego Luna.
Luna, present at SWC for the announcement, said, “I’m telling you the story that answers the questions that ‘Rogue One’ didn’t answer.”
“You’re not going to recognize Cassian Andor in the beginning. I cannot wait for you to meet him!,” Luna added.
Actress Genevieve O’Reilly, who is also reprising her character of a young Mon Mothma from “Rogue One,” said, “What’s amazing is that Lucasfilm and our creators have given us space to tell her story.”
The series is set during the height of the Empire and begins with the destruction of Andor’s homeworld. According to creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy at SWC, “We’re going to rewind 5 years back from Rogue One.” So that gives you an idea of where the series fits into the Star Wars universe of stories.
Ready to take a first look at “Andor”? Here you go:
The series was originally going to be a limited run of a one season of 12 episodes, but that has been extended for a season two already as they realized there was so much story to tell.
Gilroy said that the series will be back in front on the cameras in November to shoot the second season, and the final episode of the second season will “walk you into ‘Rogue.'”
When asked to describe “Andor,” O’Reilly said, “Thriller, adventure, and revolution.” From the trailer, I can see what she means.
The series also stars Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Fiona Shaw, and Kyle Soller.
“Andor” will premiere on Disney+ on August 31, 2022. It will debut with the first two episodes, then return to a weekly single episode schedule.
