‘Descendants’ Spin-Off Movie ‘The Pocketwatch’ Greenlit for Disney+

Set in the same universe as the popular “Descendants” movie series, “The Pocketwatch” musical movie has been greenlit for Disney+.

The movie centers on the new characters of Red, the whip-smart and rebellious teenage daughter of the Queen of Hearts (“Alice in Wonderland”) and Chloe, the perfectionist and athletic daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming (“Cinderella”).

In order to prevent an impending coup in Auradon, one that coincides with the celebration of a new royal baby, Red must join forces with Chloe to travel in back in time, via the White Rabbit’s pocket watch, to stop an event that would lead to grave consequences.

In addition to the already established land of Auradon, the action will bring the characters through the rabbit hole to the hostile unincorporated territory of Wonderland, a magical, mysterious place made famous in “Alice in Wonderland.”

Casting hasn’t started for “The Pocketwatch,” but Jennifer Phang is set to direct, and will also be co-executive producer of the movie, which is scheduled to begin production in the fall from a script written by Dan Frey and Russell Sommer (“Magic: The Gathering”).

“With a captivating script and Jennifer Phang’s directorial vision, we’re setting a new high bar of creativity and imagination, with a movie that ups the ante on story, song and dance to entertain young viewers, their families, and the global fan base that grew up with the aspirational story of ‘Descendants,’ said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television.

Descendants 1-3

There are three “Descendants” movies prior to “The Pocketwatch,” all centered on the lives of the teenage children of four Disney-villains on the Isle of the Lost, and their move to Auradon at the request of the teenage son of Queen Belle and King Beast.

Those movies starred Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, Booboo Stewart, and Cameron Boyce, who unfortunately passed away prior to the debut of “Descendants 3.”

All three live-action movies, along with an animated spin-off series, “Descendants: Wicked World,” an animated special, “Descendants 2: The Royal Wedding,” and the live-action “Under the Sea: A Descendants Short Story,” are available on Disney+.

It is not known if “The Pocketwatch” will feature any of the “Descendants” characters, but seven new songs and several Disney classic songs will be included in the movie.

Look for a 2023 release for the film.
