"West Side Story," "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," and More Win at BAFTA and Critic's Choice Awards

Yesterday was a big day for the awards season, as both the BAFTAs and the Critic’s Choice Awards were held to recognize the best in film and television.

Disney scored wins at both ceremonies.


First, let’s look at the BAFTA results…

The EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) were handed out in an in-person ceremony at Royal Albert Hall in London, recognizing the year’s best in film.

Among the Disney-related films receiving wins were “West Side Story,” “Encanto,” “Summer of Soul,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and “Cruella.”

Best Supporting Actress

  • ARIANA DEBOSE – West Side Story (20th Century Studios)

Best Animated Film

  • ENCANTO – Jared Bush, Byron Howard, Yvett Merino, Clark Spencer (Walt Disney Animation Studio)

Best Documentary

  • SUMMER OF SOUL (OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED) – Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, David Dinerstein, Robert Fyvolent, Joseph Patel (Searchlight)

Best Casting

  • Cindy Tolan – WEST SIDE STORY (20th Century Studios)

Best Costume Design

  • Jenny Beavan – CRUELLA (Walt Disney Studios)

Best Make Up & Hair

  • Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram, Justin Raleigh – THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE (Searchlight)

Then later in the day, the 27th annual Critics Choice Awards were held in Los Angeles, where the critics honored the year’s best in film and television.

Among the winners in film were “West Side Story,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and “Cruella,” while “Dopesick,” and “Marvel’s What If…?” won in the television categories. Actor Billy Crystal also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his many roles, including Mike Wasowski from “Monsters, Inc.,” which appeared in his tribute reel.

Best Supporting Actress in a Film

  • Ariana DeBose – West Side Story (20th Century Studios)

  • Jenny Beavan – Cruella (Walt Disney Studios)

Best Hair and Makeup in a Film

  • Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram, Justin Raleigh – The Eyes of Tammy Faye (Searchlight)

Best Editing in a Film

  • Sarah Broshar and Michael Kahn – West Side Story (20th Century Studios)

Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television

  • Michael Keaton – Dopesick (Hulu)

Best Animated Series

  • Marvel’s What If…? (Disney+)

Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Billy Crystal

Congrats to all the winners at both award shows, which are each considered indicators for the Oscars. If that’s the case, Ariana DeBose should win the Best Supporting Actress for “West Side Story” (she recently won a SAG Award for the role). Things are also looking good for Jessica Chastain to pick up the Best Actress Oscar (she also picked up a SAG Award for the role).
