Disney on Broadway announces return dates for two musicals

Disney Theatrical Productions, Disney’s Broadway musical division, has announced the reopening of The Lion King the musical and Aladdin the musical this September. Like all of Broadway, Disney’s shows have been shuttered since the pandemic closed the Great White Way back in March 2020. Disney’s theatrical division also revealed all-new guest benefits for ticket sales including no penalties for date changes, ticket cancellations, and more.

In a statement by Thomas Schumacher, President & Producer of Disney Theatrical Productions, “After 18 months of being apart we are thrilled to welcome our audiences back and are proud to introduce these unique benefits to make buying Broadway tickets risk-free, flexible and affordable, Broadway’s reopening – before tourists fully return – will be the perfect time for us tri-staters to attend Broadway as shows will be more accessible than ever.”

The Lion King will be reopening on September 14, along with other big Broadway hits Wicked and Hamilton. Aladdin meanwhile will reopen on September 28.

The popular Frozen musical, the third show Disney had on Broadway, closed with the pandemic, but will not reopen.

The September 14 return of Broadway – kicked off by Hamilton, The Lion King and Wicked – was announced this morning in a joint appearance on ‘Good Morning America.’ This alliance between Broadway’s three highest profile hits is intended to send a message that Broadway is united in its commitment to ending a devastating period of hardship for the tens of thousands who make their living directly on Broadway shows and the tens of thousands in dependent industries.

Disney, along with these openings, is introducing new benefits for guests visiting the New Amsterdam and Minskoff Theatres. Disney will be paying for all fees and services charged by TicketMaster through August 7, 2022. If you cannot attend a performance, exchanges and refunds are free.

Guest and Performer Safety is Key

Disney on Broadway stressed that the New Amsterdam and Minskoff Theatres will follow New York State and CDC guidelines to ensure the safety of all actors, production staff, theatre employees, and audience members. As public health conditions and the State’s guidance for performing arts and live entertainment changes, Disney’s theaters will remain flexible and adapt to applicable health protocols, such as face coverings, health screening, enhanced air filtration and ventilation, and rigorous cleaning and disinfection.
