Disney moves “Artemis Fowl” debut to Disney+

Artemis Fowl

“Artemis Fowl,” the live-action movie based on Eoin Colfer’s popular young adult novels, is moving is debut to Disney’s new streaming service – Disney+. No release date is announced yet, but the theatrical release was going to be May 29, 2020.

The world certainly feels upside down thanks to the unprecedented world health emergency, so the decision to start shifting movies that once were destined for theaters to streaming platforms is not all that unexpected. There had already been some chatter that “Artemis Fowl” would be a good candidate for this transition.

“With audiences largely unable to attend theatres in the current environment, we are thrilled to offer the premiere of ‘Artemis Fowl’ on Disney+,” said Ricky Strauss, President, Content & Marketing, Disney+. “Director Kenneth Branagh and his spectacular cast take viewers right into the vibrant, fantasy world of the beloved book, which fans have been waiting to see brought to life onscreen for years. It’s great family entertainment that is the perfect addition to Disney+’s summer lineup.”

“Artemis Fowl” stars newcomer Ferdia Shaw in the title role alongside Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Josh McGuire, Nikesh Patel and Adrian Scarborough, with Colin Farrell and Dame Judi Dench.

Watch this special featurette trailer for a look behind the scenes at how “Artemis Fowl” was brought to life:

Production on Disney’s “Artemis Fowl” started in December of 2018 and an August 2019 release was originally targeted, but the film’s theatrical release was pushed back after Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox.

We’re going to miss not seeing Artemis Fowl on the big screen where we know the special effects and action sequences would have a greater impact, but we’re also happy to hear the movie isn’t going to sit on a shelf in Disney’s vault much longer. We loved the first book and think it will translate well to the big screen under Branagh’s direction.

About Artemis Fowl:

In this fantastical, spellbinding adventure, 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl (Shaw), a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, embarks on a journey to find his father (Farrell), who has mysteriously disappeared. With the help of his loyal protector Butler (Anozie), Artemis sets out to find him, and in doing so uncovers an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies. Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan—so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.

Kenneth Branagh, p.g.a. and Judy Hofflund, p.g.a. are producing with Angus More Gordon and Matthew Jenkins serving as executive producers. Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl wrote the screenplay.
