Preview 2018 Christmas Party Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom special card

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party will start spreading Yuletide cheer to guests beginning with the first party on November 8th. That will also be the first chance for event attendees to pick up a special game card from the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom interactive game. This year’s card has a design that features birds from Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room.

If you’ve never played before, you can pick up your first set of cards at the Firehouse on Main Street, U.S.A. and a map to the game locations. Additional cards are available to be purchased at select merchandise locations, or you can pick up a new deck of five cards on your next visit to the Magic Kingdom, as long as you are an active player.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom (SOTMK) was one of Walt Disney World’s first attempts to introduce game play to the parks in a way that didn’t distract from the Magic Kingdom’s main activities. Guests interact with magic portals throughout the park and use special spell cards to engage Disney villains in a magic attack.

SOTMK has evolved slightly over the years, for instance you can now use your magicband as your keycard, and still has a passionate group of dedicated players. Recently a new mobile app experience was introduced called Play Disney. So far the two are separate, but it would be fun to see them combined in the future for even more game play options for those who have played SOTMK frequently in the past.

On the special MVMCP card, the birds are all festooned with holiday apparel and the background is Pineapples, of course. The special spell is the Flaming Animal Spell which reads “In your calendar so tiki / Are surprises bold and beaky.”

According to Imagineer Jonathan Ackley, the backstory for this year’s party exclusive card is that Merlin the Magician created it after he became enchanted with a quartet of caroling birds down in the tropics.

“These charismatic avian performers inspired Merlin to create a new charm to give his acolytes for the year’s holiday celebration,” Jonathan said. “The Disney Villains will need to watch out, or they’ll end up with egg on their faces!”

Next time you’re at the Magic Kingdom, take some time to play Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom and help Merlin defeat scheming Disney Villains who wish to take over Magic Kingdom Park.
