The numbers are in from the opening weekend of Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and The Wasp” and the sequel to 2015’s “Ant-Man” made it to the top of the ant hill besting “Dying to Survive” (out of China) and Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” for a worldwide take of $161 million.
Domestically, the film did a respectable $76M making it the 20th consecutive Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to debut in the top spot. The international take was a hefty $85M and together it pushed the total box office for the MCU beyond $17 Billion.
So “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” which stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly respectively, is performing better at the box office than the original, and it’s also doing well with critics, scoring 86% positive at Rotten Tomatoes. The film will have to out earn the original’s $519M to be considered a big success.
Fans of Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” did turn out in sufficient numbers to nab 2nd place and add another $29M domestically to its box office take, pushing it over $500M box office in North America. Globally, it’s earned over $773M.
Have you seen “Ant-Man and the Wasp?” What did you think of the movie? I have to think Disney is pretty happy with the performance of both films this weekend.
