It’s time for a shakeup at Pixar. No, they’re not changing the way they do things, just the order of a few future releases. Mostly, Toy Story 4 has been pushed back a year to make room for the Cars 3 movie. We also learned the release date for The Incredibles 2.
Here’s what the lineup looks like now:
The Good Dinosaur – November 25, 2015
Finding Dory – June 17, 2016
Cars 3 – June 16, 2017
CoCo – November 22, 2017
Toy Story 4 – June 15, 2018
The Incredibles 2 – June 21, 2019
Yeah, that’s a lot of sequels. But it’s for a good cause. We need Finding Dory and Cars 3 to succeed so we can get more films like Coco. The box office winners give the company a little leeway to make the unusual films. I can get on board with that.
Also, I’m a little surprised that the Cars threequel was moved up. John Lasseter said he wouldn’t make a third film until he had a story he loved. It was just announced in March of 2014, He must have really loved it to the point where they expect few if any revisions. That’s less than a 3 year cycle. It can be done, but it’s rare in animation these days.
What do you think of the new release date for Toy Story 3 and the fast track for Cars 3?
Hopefully Lasseter didn’t just love the cars story because Disney execs told him Pixar wasn’t making enough money.
Geoff, the plot that you describe could be a sequel – great creative genius vs the bean counters. It reminds of the great classic Walt & Roy.
