How to tell your kids they’re going to Walt Disney World?

wdw-welcome-sign

I know this is hard to believe for most Disney fans, but many families only visit Walt Disney World once or twice while the kids are still young. So when and how families decide to tell their children they’re going to the most Magical Place on Earth for vacation is a big deal. In fact, there’s a whole genre of YouTube videos dedicated to taping the big moment of surprise.

Sometimes you wait until the very last minute. Like when they’re already at the airport:

Left him speechless. Kids usually have a slightly more excited reaction, like this:

Or there’s the tried and true, try to figure out the clue method:

I thought, the idea on this one was great, the execution was a bit poor. Took them 2 minutes to figure it out.

And there’s the always reliable Scavenger Hunt:

I could go on. There are dozens of these uploaded every year.

How did you let your kids know they’re going on a Disney vacation?

  1. My daughter has been to Disney World 7 times, but I did surprise her on her 5th trip when she was 5. We had the day off school and I told her we were going somewhere fun in Denver. When we pulled into the shuttle lot for the airport she said, “This does NOT look like fun!” When I pulled the suitcases out of the car, her face lit up and she suddenly realized where we were going. She was so excited.
I usually at least try to plan a surprise that she doesn’t know about while we are at Disney World (this past trip is was the Villains Dessert party in the castle). I plan on surprising her with her first Disney Cruise this November. It is so hard to keep the secret though!
