While “Guardians of the Galaxy” faced stiff competition from a film with deep roots in our culture, Disney’s latest film from Marvel has persevered and reclaimed the top spot at the Box Office in its 4th week. Not only did it beat “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (which has been getting bad word of mouth), it topped newcomers “If I Stay” and the “Sin City” sequel in its return to rule the roost.
The $17.6 million in box office rockets “Guardians of the Galaxy” to over $250 million domestically and $489 million worldwide. All together, Guardians of the Galaxy is now the biggest summer movie of 2014.
When you look at all of 2014, Disney has now had three #1 films “Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714 Million worldwide)and “Maleficent” ($750 Million worldwide), plus “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
In fact, that gives Disney 3 of the top 5 films of 2014 so far by domestic box office. By the end of next weekend Guardians should shoot to the top film for all of 2014. I think Marvel has another hit on their hands, don’t you?
Now, with labor day upon us, summer is wrapping up and Disney still has three films left for 2014 (McFarland just moved to 2015). Which film do you think has the best chance to challenge Guardians for that top spot?
