3 New ABC Sitcoms bring the laughs with varying amounts of success

abc

More and more, TV channels are posting their pilot episodes for upcoming shows online weeks before their premiere to boost hype and word-of-mouth for the program. ABC joined in on the pilot preview fun by releasing 3 new sitcoms’ first outings: “Trophy Wife”, “Back in the Game” and “The Goldbergs”

“Trophy Wife” stars Malin Akerman whose character marries a man around 20 years older than her. With that marriage comes 3 step kids from two different ex wives. (Can you say AWKWARD?) The pilot shows their meeting and how she is coping about a year after the marriage. She tries to become closer to the kids, which ends in a great drunk sequence. Of all the shows this season on ABC, I was most looking forward to this one, and I wasn’t disappointed. The most laughs came out of this show for me. The cast blends incredibly well together and the writers know what they are doing. I will definitely be watching (and you should too!) when this premieres on September 24th at 9:30pm.

“Back in the Game” stars Maggie Lawson as a single mom moving back in with her dad, who just happens to be a Minor League Baseball has-been who is now a drunk. COMEDY ENSUES! Maggie’s character ends up starting a baseball team full of the kids who got cut at tryouts to fill her time not spent going on job interviews. I didn’t go into this one expecting to like it, but boy, was I wrong! I am in love with the humor (Maggie Lawson shines and James Caan is hilarious) and the heart of the show. The British character who becomes friends with Maggie’s character is hilarious and a great sidekick-y type role. All in all, I highly recommend checking this one out, even if you don’t like Baseball (which I don’t). It premieres September 25th at 830pm.

“The Goldbergs” is a family comedy set in the 1980’s and based off of the creator’s home videos he took as a kid. The episode I saw has a “kid getting his driver’s license” arc, which probably wasn’t a good way to start the show. For me, the show was just “eh”. Not too good, not too bad. It became one of those shows where I will watch two more episodes and decide from there. The only reason I am coming back for more is Wendi Mclendon-Covey. She plays the mom and is brilliant. She steals every scene she is in and is incredibly funny. I think you should give it a chance if you have time, but don’t rearrange your whole TV schedule to watch it. It premieres September 24th at 9pm.

What do you think of these new pilots? Are you looking forward to these or any other ABC shows this season? Isn’t the drunk scene in “Trophy Wife” one of the Top 5 drunk scenes of all-time?! Let me know in the comments below! Be sure to check back here on The Disney Blog for more ABC recaps and reviews for the 2013-2014 TV season! Until next time…Have a magical day!

  1. I only hope this new series doesn’t cause Maggie Lawson to have to cut back on Psych. It seems weird to be a regular on two series at the same time.
