Disney at Comic-Con 2012: What to Look Forward To

July 12th-15th is the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. This annual event showcases entertainment’s latest and greatest projects of the past, present and (most importantly) future. After a 2 year hiatus, Disney has decided to go back to the con (Disney did have off-site presence though, with the Flynn’s Arcade and Alice In Wonderland exhibits). Some rumors and stories have already leaked, but I wanted to give a brief “Intro to Disney at Comic-Con 2012” just to let you know what to expect come July 12th.

  • Lots of MARVEL news has appeared lately. First off, the next three Marvel films will be sequels. Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2 are next on the Marvel slate, but there was much speculation as to what new property will get the Hollywood treatment. Guardians of the Galaxy has been announced as the next Marvel “franchise”. This Avengers-esque group of 5 superhuman/extraterrestrial heroes that help keep the Milky Way Galaxy safe. An official announcement is expected at Comic-Con.
  • One of the biggest stories for any WALT DISNEY FEATURE ANIMATION fans out there is the announcement that a Marvel animated feature is in the works. Planned as the 2014 WDAS release, Big Hero 6 is an eclectic group of superheroes that was put together by the Japanese government. Expect a small announcement or mention of this at Comic-Con. Also, keep your eye out for some new Wreck-It Ralph information/video and maybe, just maybe, a tiny Frozen mention over the 4 day period.
  • TV ANIMATION is receiving a lot of the Disney spotlight this time round. A Tron: Uprising panel will feature not only Tron, but also the Disney XD show Motorcity and the upcoming Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja. The ever popular Phineas and Ferb will be having a panel all to their selves with a sneak peek at this year’s summer event “Where’s Perry?” A final Disney Channel Television Animation panel will take place, featuring Fish Hooks, Gravity Falls, and the upcoming Wander Over Yonder.
  • ABC will be bringing 3 of its shows to the con. Once Upon A Time will have a full panel while the new show 666 Park Avenue will have a pilot screening and be featured on the hotel room key’s across San Diego. The Neighbors will have an interactive booth with t-shirt giveaways showing off their new show (very similar to Pan-Am’s booth at last year’s con).

Are you going? What panels are you planning on attending? Are you just wanting it to be the D23 Expo already? Let me know in the comments below. Be sure to check out thedisneyblog.com for all Disney announcements made in San Diego this year. Until next time…Have a Magical Day!

  1. Just an FYI. The Guardians of the Galaxy picture posted here is the old version set in a dystopian future. The version that appears to be in development is the modern version in a contemporary setting.

  2. Hopefully there will be some news news about Del Toro’s Haunted Mansion and John Favreau’s Magic Kingdom! I hope they are both stil in the works!

    1. Hoping for info on both as well. More excited or Haunted Mansion though, since he is a huge fan and seems passionate about the project.

  3. I am showing my advancing age (cough-half-century-cough), but as usual, the missing element from the Disney plans (as I’ve heard them) and from the San Diego event is in the increasing irrelevance of the name “COMIC” in comic con. It seems that the combination of written word and accompanying artwork (outside of the IPad app that retreads and translates Italian Disney stories that have already been “appidized” for an Italian audience) is something that the company just doesn’t care about for its American fans. Indeed, it appears to be a game of attrition, where a diminished fan base doesn’t allow anyone to make a living at it, granting the once incredibly creative medium, at least for Disney, an ignoble, humiliating, unnoticed demise.

  4. For Walt Disney Feature Animation, would you happen to know if they’re going to talk about the two upcoming films for 2013: The Great and Powerful Oz (March 2013) and Frozen (November 2013)?
