Disney Theatrical’s production of “The Lion King” just surpassed “Phantom of the Opera” as the highest grossing show on Broadway. The hit musical based on the animated film, has generated a total of $853.8 million in ticket sales since opening on Broadway in 1997. They’re helped by prices averaging $55 a ticket more than Phantom, but a record is a record, right?
Next up, knocking Phantom off its perch as World Wide box office champ. The masked creature has raked in $5.6 billion world wide. The Lion King has a ways to go at $4.8 billion.
