Disney cult classic Newsies, about newsboys who wage a labor strike in 1890s New York, is being worked into a stage musical by composer Alan Menken, lyricist Jack Feldman, choreographer Christopher Gattelli, and librettist Harvey Fierstein. Together they are adapting the movie to the stage, while adding in songs, fresh characters, new plot points, and choreography to match the modern era.
The production is being developed at Paper Mill Playhouse and really said to be more of a homage to the 1992 film. Here’s a short video from Playbill featuring the creative team. Below the jump is a video with a sneak peek at some of the songs from the show.
That was filmed Sept. 1 at the New 42nd Street Studios and features Jeremy Jordan as streetwise Jack Kelly, Andrew Keenan-Bolger as sidekick Crutchie and Kara Lindsay as Katherine Plumber, a newly invented love interest.

Newsies has been one of my favorite movies practically since it came out. I am so excited about this! Also, I’m glad there will be a new love interest – Sarah just wasn’t developed enough in the film. I’m going to miss Christian Bale as Jack, though :)
I absolutely adore this movie, and I am so excited for the musical adaptation, especially to see Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Crutchie!!! The only thing I’m confused about is Katherine Plumber. Is she a teenager, because I never thought Disney thought highly about cougars. And if she writes the article, where does Denton fit in?
