It’s been a year since the tragic events that led to the death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau during an interactive session with a killer whale after a ‘Dine with Shamu’ show. During that time trainers have been kept out of the water both during shows and backstage having to do all their work either from the side of the pool or in very shallow water. Now some in water interaction will be re-introduced, but only in the medical pool that features a bottom which rises and drops to facilitate health inspection behaviors with the killer whales.
There is no word on whether this might lead to the re-introduction of trainers in the water during the more popular Shamu shows. SeaWorld’s newest show ‘One Ocean’, which will debut in late April in San Diego and Orlando, is designed to be run without trainers in the water at the same time as the killer whales, but still have the energy of the best Shamu shows in the past.
