Fan-Driven Celebration of Magic Kingdom’s 40th Anniversary

The Magic Kingdom turns 40 on October 1, 2011. Disney hasn’t announced any celebrations of the event, though there is some attractive 40th Anniversary merchandise for sale at places like the Emporium.

Determined to mark the birthday somehow, I have been holding informal fan “meets” every Saturday at 2pm to commemorate just one attraction per week. It turns out that if you plan to end on Oct. 1 (also a Saturday) and work backwards, there are 40 Saturdays in 2011… and there are pretty much exactly 40 attractions in the Magic Kingdom (the schedule includes a few not-quite-attractions, but it’s close enough).

All Disney fans are welcome to show up, with no RSVP needed, for these “40×40” fan celebrations. I pass out a handout with some trivia and history for the attraction of the week, then we ride the thing as a big group, and that’s about it – you can go about your day or your vacation on your own after that.

Stop by if you get the chance! We meet at the Enchanted Grove tables (a counter-service eatery on the Fantasyland side of Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe).
