Some guests visiting Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland this week, were pleasantly surprised to witness some free-roaming droids walking around, courtesy of Disney Imagineers.
The Details
Disney Imagineers hosted a one-day play test at Disneyland with these droids-in-training to test out their functions on the planet of Batuu…supervised, of course.
A part of Disney’s robotic character pipeline, which was also demonstrated during SXSW 2023, Imagineers have teamed-up with animators to design characters capable of great balance and highly expressive motions.
Disney says the new robotic character prototype “combines procedural animation, modular hardware, and reinforcement learning to be able to design and program a walking character capable of these unique gaits and traits.”
