Disneyland has closed Space Mountain just as the busy Halloween season gets under way, for an extensive five-week refurbishment of the attraction.
The Details
According to Disneyland, the attraction will remain closed through October 26, 2023, and reopen October 27, 2023.
In past Halloween seasons, the park added a “Ghost Galaxy” holiday overlay, which added video projections of spinning nebulas and a fiery space demon to the pitch black indoor coaster. That fearsome intergalactic creature with a flaming skull head reaches out with his skeletal hands as riders race past in the dark.
But not this year. This year the ride will remain shuttered for the Halloween season.
In addition to normal refurbishment touch-ups, Disneyland says crews will update the Space Mountain systems that help prevent unexpected downtimes during the five-week refurbishment.
The Attraction
Space Mountain first opened at Disneyland on May 27, 1977, and it was the second version of the coaster opened by Disney. The first version opened at Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in 1975.
The last major update done to the attraction occurred in 2018, when the queue line was extended into the upper level of the former Starcade, however in May of this year, the annual “Star Wars”-themed “Hyperspace Mountain” overlay was added to the ride for a limited time.
