Two more fan favorite series have been cancelled by Hulu: “The Great” and “How I Met Your Father.”
The Great
Hulu has cancelled historical dramedy “The Great” after three seasons. The series, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, told the story of Catherine the Great, Russia’s reigning empress from 1762 to 1796.
The show tells a fictionalized, fun, and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military, and get the court on her side.
The Emmy-winning series dropped its third season May 12, 2023, and revolved around Catherine (Fanning) and Nicholas (Hoult) working on their marriage, and saw several key characters meet their end.
“The Great” also starred Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.
It’s worth noting Fanning had received numerous other accolades for her performance as Catherine, including a SAG, a Critics Choice, an Independent Spirit Award and two Golden Globe nominations.
How I Met Your Father
Hulu has also decided to cancel “How I Met Your Father” after two seasons.
A standalone sequel to CBS’ long-running “How I Met Your Mother” series, this version is set in the near future, where Sophie (Kim Cattrall) is telling her son the story of how she met his father.
This story takes the viewer back to the year 2021 where Sophie (Hilary Duff) and her close-knit group of friends – Jesse (Chris Lowell), Valentina (Francia Raisa), Charlie (Tom Ainsley), Ellen (Tien Tran) and Sid (Suraj Sharma) — are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.
“How I Met Your Father” also featureed cameos by original series stars Cobie Smulders (as Robin Scherbatsky) and Neil Patrick Harris (as Barney Stinson).
Why the Cancellations
As of now, Hulu hasn’t given any reasons for the cancellations, though they haven’t removed the series from streaming, either.
Both series are still available to watch, as is all nine seasons of the original “How I Met Your Mother.”
The Walt Disney Company has been on an overall mission to reduce the amount of series it offers, with Disney+ also recently cancelling “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D” after two seasons, and “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” which was reportedly finished but never aired.
