Another casualty of the current pruning of Disney+ content is the live-action series “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” which has been cancelled before it has even aired.

The Details

The series, based on the popular children’s fantasy books, was a rare Disney+ series based on a non-Disney IP coming from an outside studio.

The six-episode series, a joint venture between Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, has been completed, so it will be shopped by Paramount to other potential buyers.

Based on the series of bestselling books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, “The Spiderwick Chronicles” is a gothic coming-of-age story about twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, who with their mom, relocate from New York to Michigan to live in their run-down ancestral home, The Spiderwick Estate.

Once there, they find themselves pulled into an alternate world full of faeries and other creatures.

The cast included Jack Dylan Grazer, Lyon Daniels, Noah Cottrell, Joy Bryant and Mychala Lee, along with Christian Slater, who had a one-season deal to play villain Mulgarath.

“The Spiderwick Chronicles” was first announced as part of Disney+ Day in November 2021. It went into production last September in Canada, and wrapped filming in early 2023.

Other Cancellations

This news comes on the heels of the cancellation of “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” this week, as well as other recent cancellations of many one and two season shows.
