The Film
Released June 5, 1998, the film is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, told in the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.”
Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen) takes his spot — though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits.
Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu (voiced by Eddie Murphy), she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, and ends up falling in love with a dashing captain along the way.
The film was the first of three features produced primarily at the Disney animation studio at Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios) at Walt Disney World.
It won several awards, including ten Annie Awards, including “Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Theatrical Feature.”
