Jeremy Renner, Marvel Avenger and host of upcoming Disney+ series “Rennervations,” will talk with ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer about his near-fatal snowplow accident in “Jeremy Renner: The Diane Sawyer Interview — A Story of Terror, Survival and Triumph,” airing April 6 on ABC.
The Accident
On January 1, 2023, Renner was using his 7-ton Sno-Cat snowplow in the driveway of his Lake Tahoe home when the accident occurred. He had been trying to stop the snow-removal tractor from sliding and hitting his nephew when he was pulled under and crushed.
The actor was then airlifted to a hospital where he was treated for “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries.”
The Renner interview includes the shocking 911 call made to save Renner’s life, as well Sawyer reading off a long list of Renner’s injuries, which include “eight ribs broken in 14 places. Right knee, right ankle broken, left leg tibia broken, left ankle broken, right clavicle broken, right shoulder broken. Face, eye socket, jaw, mandible broken. Lung collapsed. Pierced from the rib bone, your liver — which sounds terrifying.”
When she asks how much of the pain he remembers, Renner says, “All of it. I was awake through every moment.”
The news special also features harrowing recollections of the accident from family members of Renner’s, including the nephew he was trying to protect, and behind-the-scenes looks at his ongoing journey to recovery.
“I chose to survive. That’s not gonna kill me, no way,” he says. “I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience, but I’ve been refueled and refilled with love and titanium.”
