FX’s limited series production of Great Expectations, based on the classic novel by Charles Dickens, and featuring Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, will air weekly on Hulu from March 26 to April 23, 2023.
The Story
Published in 1861, Dicken’s novel tells the story of Pip (Fionn Whitehead), an orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life, until a twist of fate and the evil machinations of the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman) shows him a dark world of possibilities.
Under the expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the true cost of this new world, and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be in this adaptation of Dicken’s critique of societal class systems.
The Cast and Crew
In addition to Whitehead and Colman, this production includes Shalom Brune-Franklin as Miss Havisham’s daughter Estella who is also Pip’s love interest; Ashley Thomas as Jaggers, a powerful lawyer and businessman who guides Pip; Hayley Squires as Sara Gargery, Pip’s overbearing older sister; Owen McDonnell as Sara’s husband Joe Gargery; and Johnny Harris as Magwitch, an escaped convict Pip encounters.
Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) serves as writer, adapting Dicken’s novel to this limited series, and also executive producer alongside Tom Hardy, Ridley Scott, Dean Baker, David W. Zucker, and Kate Crowe. Brady Hood and Samira Radsi serve as directors.
Great Expectations is produced by FX Productions in association with the BBC, Scott Free, and Hardy Son & Baker.
The limited series will air on BBC in the UK, and it will be available to stream on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ under the Star banner at a later date.
