A month after announcing that Disney+ had signed a deal for streaming rights to new seasons of “Doctor Who” outside of the UK and Ireland, we now know Millie Gibson will be playing The Companion next.
Meet The New Companion
British actress Millie Gibson will be taking on the role of Ruby Sunday, also known as The Companion, opposite the new Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa.
Gibson is best known for her role of Kelly Neelan in the British soap opera “Coronation Street,” for which she won the British Soap Award for Best Young Actor in 2022.
“Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honored to be cast as the Doctor’s companion. It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have traveled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started,” she said in a statement.
We can expect to see Gibson’s debut, along with Gatwa’s as the 15th Doctor, on Disney+ in November 2023.
The Series
“Doctor Who” began in 1963 on the BBC in the UK, which means the November 2023 start date of the new contract coincides with the show’s 60th anniversary.
The series depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human.
The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS, which appears on the outside to be a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired.
However, it is definitely much bigger on the inside.
With various Companions, like the new Ruby Sunday, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
