Producer/writer Damon Lindelof is developing and writing a new a new “Star Wars” movie for Lucasfilm, with Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in talks to direct.
About the Film
This project is so new not a lot is known about the film or its plot.
We do know that Lindelof will co-write the new movie with Justin Britt-Gibson (“The Strain,” “Counterpart).
The two reportedly met at this year’s Star Wars Celebration fan event during a Lucasfilm writers room meet-up, and decided to work together for this project.
If the film gets greenlit, Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) is their first pick to direct.
Lindelof (“Lost,” “Watchmen”) reportedly plans for this to be a stand-alone film that takes place after the last trilogy of films, which wrapped with 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” but would not be a continuation of the Skywalker saga.
Other Rumored Projects
The past few years, Lucasfilm has had great success expanding Star Wars with series on Disney+. Some expand upon already established characters like “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and “Andor.” Others create new stories like “The Mandalorian,” and “The CLone Wars.”
But when it comes to Star Wars films, Lucasfilm hasn’t released a theatrical project since “The Rise of Skywalker” … though when it comes to Star Wars, gaps between movie releases is not uncommon.
There have been talks about other film projects in recent years, but none of them have gotten off the ground.
It was announced in 2020 that Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”) would would direct “Rogue Squadron” for a December 2023 release, but the film was taken off the that date this summer due to production delays and Jenkin’s busy schedule.
It may still happen, but for now that project is in a holding pattern.
Rian Johnson who directed “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” says he is still working on a new Star Wars trilogy of films, but before that he has to finish the second and third films in the “Knives Out” series.
Screenwriter Michael Waldron (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”) has mentioned he was working on a script for a new Star Wars film, but since he just got picked to write “Avengers: Secret Wars” for Marvel, that pushes Star Wars to a backburner for him.
Even director/writer Taika Waititi has made rumblings he’d like to do a Star Wars film or two, but his card is rather full, too. He has the upcoming “Time Bandits” series, plus a “Flash Gordon” reboot film on his calendar.
As it stands, an unnamed “Star Wars” movie has been slated to open in December 2025. This Lindelof project could fill that slot, as it seems to have the most momentum out of all all the films currently in development.
When more details become available, we’ll let you know.
