Author Rick Riordan has confirmed that a new Percy Jackson book is on the way: “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods” will go on sale on September 26, 2023.
A New Stand-Alone Story
“The Percy Jackson & the Olympians” fantasy novel series had five books published between 2005 and 2009: “The Lightning Thief” (2005), “The Sea of Monsters” (2006), “The Titan’s Curse” (2007), “The Battle of the Labyrinth” (2008) and “The Last Olympian” (2009).
2014’s “The Heroes of Olympus: The Blood of Olympus,” allowed Riordan to wrap up the tales of Percy Jackson, and his friends Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, letting them concentrate on the future rather than saving the world.
“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods” will reunite the iconic trio for another grand adventure.
Here’s a synopsis of the story:
The original heroes from “The Lightning Thief” are reunited for their biggest challenge yet: getting Percy into college.
After saving the world multiple times, Percy Jackson is hoping to have a normal senior year of high school. Unfortunately, the gods aren’t quite done with him. Percy will have to fulfill a new quest in order to get the necessary letter of recommendation from Mount Olympus for his application to New Rome University.
The mission? Help Ganymede, Zeus’s cup-bearer, retrieve his lost goblet before it falls into the wrong hands. You see, one sip from it can turn a mortal into a god, and Zeus would not be pleased with that result. Can Percy, Grover, and Annabeth find the precious cup in time? And if they do, will they be able to resist its special power?
In an interview with Publisher’s Weekly, Riordan said of the new book, “There will be other gods we haven’t seen. It’s going to continue the Percy Jackson tradition of encountering gods and monsters, and it takes place mostly in and around New York City. It’s not meant to be a world-ending adventure, it’s just a day in the life of a demigod.”
The book is now available to pre-order from select retailers.
The Disney+ Series
In addition to the new book, Riordan is hard at work on the new Disney+ series based on his “Percy Jackson” novels.
“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” starts from the beginning of the books and tells the story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson (Walter Scobell), who is just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.
With help from his friends Grover (Aryan Simhadri) and Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.
The guest star and recurring cast also includes Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, Adam Copeland, Suzanne Cryer, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Timm Sharp, Dior Goodjohn, Charlie Bushnell, and Olivea Morton.
Riordan and Jon Steinberg are writing the pilot with James Bobin directing.
The series will air on Disney+ sometime in 2024.
