In an interesting turn of events, Marvel’s upcoming “Armor Wars” series for Disney+ will now be a theatrical film instead.
What We Know
“Armor Wars” was first announced during Disney Investor Day in December 2020 as a six-episode Marvel series featuring the character of War Machine, played by Don Cheadle.
Even as recently as D23 Expo 2022 earlier this month, Marvel president Kevin Feige referred to it as a series, premiering the official logo for the show.
However, it seems that during the development process for the project, it was decided by Marvel that the story being told was better suited for a feature film, rather than a Disney+ series.
About the Movie
Cheadle will still be suiting up as James “Rhodey” Rhodes aka War Machine, but now he’s going to do it on the big screen.
Yassir Lester, who has been serving as head writer on the show, is now shifting over to write the feature film.
The storyline has been summed up by Feige by one question: What happens if Tony Stark’s tech falls into the wrong hands?
He also said at D23 Expo 2022 that Rhodey fans will see the character in a whole new light, and considering the title of the series, audiences can look forward to all-new suits for the hero, featuring different types of armor.
He also confirmed that “Armor Wars” will be linked to the “Secret Invasion” series coming to Disney+ in Spring 2023.
The film will be loosely based on the Marvel comic series of the same name that featured Iron Man, but will have the focus shifted to War Machine instead, since Iron Man is no longer a part of the MCU.
