May is Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, and several Disney Springs eateries and shops are celebrating with special treats.
It’s also a new month, which means new flavors at Gideon’s Bakehouse and the newly opened Salt & Straw.
There are also several special events, and more to tell you about, so let’s dig in, shall we?
In honor of AANHPI Heritage Month, the following Asian-inspired food is available to enjoy for a limited time:
At Amorette’s Patisserie, guests can try the Philippines Maganda Ube. It is an ube chiffon layered cake with caramel-banana mousse and banana liquor glaçage. This tasty treat was created by Filipino-American pastry cook Reuben Gutierrez, who was inspired by the Filipino desserts he loved as a child. It’s available through May 31.
B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. is offering a Korean Bulgogi Steak Hot Dog through May 31. It features a spicy Korean beef-and-pork split hot dog, bulgogi steak, and pickled vegetables.
Morimoto Asia is serving up a Morimoto Asia Loco Moco burger through May 31. It is a house-blended burger with A5 Wagyu beef and filet mignon, served over a sizzling rice bowl topped with a sunny-side-up cage-free egg and teriyaki mushroom gravy.
Enjoy more Ube at Vivoli il Gelato with the Ube Tiramisu Pop, featuring ube cream and graham cracker crumbs soaked with coconut. It’s also available through May 31.
Overlapping holidays, Morimoto Asia is offering an Asian-Pacific flavored Mother’s Day Luau on May 8.
It will feature a poke and sushi bar, a hot line to include Kahuku Food Truck’s Famous Garlic Shrimp, Morimoto Style Peking Duck and a whole Kalua roasted pig, plus there will be an assortment of desserts, such as pineapple upside-down cake, and butter mochi.
While guests enjoy their lunch, they will experience a series of captivating performances by a live band, Hula dancers and a strolling Ukulele player
Tickets are $135 (+ tax/gratuity) per person. Beverages are additional. Full menu and tickets can be found at MorimotoAsia.com.
There are also new monthly flavors at two sweets shops at Disney Springs:
At Gideon’s Bakehouse, the May cookie flavor of the month is Peanut Butter Chocolate Swirl. It features a base combination of Peanut Butter dough swirled with Triple Chocolate dough, which is then topped with Chocolate Chips, Peanut Butter Chips, and House-made Candied Peanuts. Limit 2 per person.
Their cake of the month flavor is the Peanut Butter & Jelly Cake, featuring a three layer Vanilla Cake smothered in Peanut Butter Buttercream ribboned with real grape jelly. Do you feel your childhood calling yet?
May at the new Salt and Straw ice cream shop on the West Side brings the limited time Flower Power flavors. These floral flavors are made with real edible flowers and include: Saffron & Honey with Crystalized Flower Petals, Pistachio Rose Water with Strawberry Mochi, Rhubarb Crumble with Toasted Anise, Jasmine Milk Tea & Chocolate Almond Stracciatella, and Mathilde’s Hibiscus & Coconut Sherbet (this one is vegan).
I had the chance to try all the flavors, and each is delicious in its own way, but ended up with a scoop of the Rhubarb Crumble with Toasted Anise, which tasted like a slice of summar rhubarb pie with whipped cream. So. Good.
The Edison is hosting a new Mixology series of events in May featuring Espolón Tequila on May 10, 17, and 25.
Each week, guests will indulge in two deliciously curated cocktails, highlighting the notes of sweet agave, lemon zest and tropical fruit of three types of tequila: Espolòn Blanco, Espolòn Reposado, and Espolòn Anejo.
The specialty beverages will be coupled with savory Mexican-inspired dishes to highlight the smooth tequila, like deep fried churros served with Mexican chocolate sauce, and seared corvina tacos. Each week will have a different menu.
Tickets are $65 (+ tax/gratuity) per person, per week, and attendees must be 21+. Visit The Edison’s ticket page for more details or to purchase.
The Edison is also hosting a special event for bourbon fans on May 12, featuring Old Forester bourbon.
Attendees will take a walk through time, tasting four one-ounce pours of differently aged bottles of Old Forester, featuring the Kentucky straight bourbon whisky from 1870, 1897, 1910 and 1920.
As guests try each whisky, they will also enjoy an accompanying four-course meal, featuring a delectable dish that has been skillfully paired to highlight the different tasting notes of every aged bottle.
Tickets are $150 (+ tax/gratuity) per person, and attendees must be 21+. Visit The Edison’s ticket page for more details or to purchase.
Finally, Amorette’s Patisserie will have two additional limited treats available in May.
In honor of “Star Wars Day” aka “May the 4th Be With You Day,” they will offer Lightsaber Eclairs, available May 4 through 8.
Flavors include Mace Windu berry cherry, Master Yoda pistachio, Rey passion pineapple, Darth Vader Dark Side mousse flavored with cayenne pepper and cinnamon, and Obi Wan Kenobi blue matcha
In honor of Mother’s Day, they are offering the “I Love You Mom” dessert, made with coconut cream, chocolate mousse, and Grand Marnier jam on a coconut chiffon cake. It will be available May 6 through May 9.
