Walt Disney World Announces 2022 Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Refurbishment Closures

Walt Disney World - Splash Mountain

Walt Disney World has announced in early 2022, both Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain at Magic Kingdom will temporarily close for regularly scheduled refurbishments.

Splash Mountain will undergo a refurbishment first, from January 10- February 10, 2022.

During this time, WDW will not be changing the theming of the ride to “The Princess and The Frog.”

This closure is just for regular maintenance, though Disney says Disney Imagineers will take this opportunity to do some preliminary onsite work in preparation for the attraction’s future reimagining.

Splash Mountain will reopen to guests on February 11, 2022.

Walt Disney World - Big Thunder Mountain

Following this, Big Thunder Mountain will undergo a refurbishment from February 14-18, 2022.

This closure is also just for regular maintenance, and the ride will reopen to guests on February 19, 2022.

There will be no changes to the guest experience for either attraction as a result of these routine refurbishments.

  1. This is probably not going to share the same success as the Tower of Terror re theme or even the Paradise Pier re theme did.
Not just in terms of reception and for 2020 being a weird year but the amount of money that the Walt Disney Company has lost.
Disney has lost a lot over 1.4 Billion Dollars during the Coronavirus Pandemic. Also during the Pandemic 28,000 Disney cast members got layoff because of this virus that’s been going on since March.
On the other hand. The other mountains be size Splash Mountain like Thunder, Space and Matterhorn that are over 30, 40, 50, or 60 years old are just too expensive to be re themed into something else.
Do you remember The Tower of Terror re theme to Mission Breakout along with the Paradise Pier re theme to Pixar Pier at Disney’s California Adventure. Well after 10 or 15 years of being in operation and after those two got their re theme they made 3 times its reviews.
So the Splash Mountain re theme to Princess and the Frog was definitely a step back. You can tell by The Princess and the Frog concept art that Disney is running out of ideas for future re themes for Disney attractions.
If Splash Mountain gets re themed into The Princess and the Frog then a lot of Disney Park fans including Splash Mountain fans would get so mad and not go on the ride and everyone will stop going to Disneyland and Walt Disney World because this is one of their favorite attractions when they go to the Disney Parks.
Other than that a lot of angry people will get Disney to sign a contract to not aloud anymore classic attractions getting re themes in the Disney Parks after Walt Disney’s work.
