Disney’s “Encanto” has managed to keep the top spot at the weekend box office for a second week, eeking out a little over $12.7 million.
This plus an additional $20.7 million from international markets brings the two week total for “Encanto” to $116.1 million.
“Encanto” was also the #1 film in France, Italy, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Singapore, Argentina, Kuwait, Qatar, South Africa and several Latin American countries.
The post-Thanksgiving box office is generally slow, but coupled with news of the Omnicron variant virus, many movie-goers simply chose to stay home this weekend.
I don’t think the movie will accumulate too much more at the box office in the U.S., though, for two reasons: First, it will debut on Disney+ in the U.S. on Christmas Eve, just a little over two weeks away.
Second, the Sony and Disney/Marvel collaborative film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” debuts December 17 in the U.S., and it already broke first-day ticket presales records for the pandemic for AMC Theatres, Cinemark, and Fandango.
In fact, Fandango said the first day of ticket sales for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” beat the initial 24-hour sales of “Black Widow,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
World-wide, the film hits the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Mexico and Korea on December 15, prior to the U.S. release.
The film marks the third-film in the Tom Holland-era “Spider-Man,” and while the actor isn’t signed for any future films in the franchise, “Spider-Man” producer (and former Sony Pictures Boss) Amy Pascal says that a new Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man trilogy with Tom Holland is in the early works.
Also worth noting this week is that Marvel’s “Eternals” is still holding the #5 spot on the U.S. box office with a total 5 week U.S. gross of $156,528,707. This is definitely a film you want to see in the theaters.
Have you seen “Encanto” or “Eternals” yet? Do you plan to see “Spider-Man: No Way Home”? Let me know in comments!
