Marvel Studios once again takes the top spot at the box office as Eternals opens in the U.S. with a $71 million opening weekend.
Add to this an additional $90.7 million in international box office, and the total weekend worldwide is $161.7 million.
This makes the opening weekend for Eternals the second-biggest worldwide bow of 2021 (behind only F9: The Fast Saga’s $163 million).
Eternals also opened No. 1 in international markets such as Italy, Brazil, and Hong Kong.
In South Korea, it enjoyed the biggest opening weekend of any film this year, accounting for 82.4% of the nationwide weekend box office.
A large part of that audience could be due to South Korean actor Don Lee (also known as Ma Dong Seok), who plays Gilgamesh. He was a big star in his country with roles in films like Train to Busan prior to being cast in the Marvel film.
Eternals hasn’t been released yet in China, a major international film market, and it may not even get a release, plus some several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar, have halted the film’s release on religious grounds since it features the MCU’s first gay superhero.
