The story of Wendy Darling and Peter Pan first met in a 1904 play then again in a book in 1911. Author J.M. Barrie’s story has seen many adaptations over the years, but none as beloved as Walt Disney’s 1953 animated feature. Last year The Walt Disney Company announced that it will film a new live-action adaptation film called “Peter Pan & Wendy.”
Principal photography on “Peter Pan & Wendy” has begun in Vancouver, Canada. The film is directed by David Lowery (“The Old Man & The Gun”) and produced by Jim Whitaker (“Flight Plan”). “Peter Pan & Wendy” will premiere on Disney+ in 2022.
The Disney+ movie will draw inspiration from J.M. Barrie’s novel “Peter and Wendy” and Disney’s animated classic. The new movie will tell the timeless story of a Wendy Darling, a young girl who, defying her parents’ wishes to attend boarding school, travels with her two younger brothers, John and Michael, to the magical Neverland.
In the magical land, she meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up; Tinker Bell, a tiny fairy; and Captain Hook, an evil pirate captain. Soon the Darling children find themselves on a dangerous adventure far, far away from their family and the comforts of home.
Director David Lowery talked about the original story of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, “Peter Pan has long been one of my favorite stories, partially because I’ve always resisted growing up, but also because of the heart, adventure and imagination that makes J.M. Barrie’s original tale so evergreen.”
As principal photography begins, Disney announced a bevy of great actors will be joining the production. Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Serenity) as Mr. Darling; Jude Law (AI: Artificial Intelligence, Captain Marvel) as Captain Hook; and Jim Gaffigan (“The Jim Gaffigan Show,” “Them That Follow”) as Smee; Yara Shahidi (“Grown-ish”) as Tinkerbell; Ever Anderson (“Black Widow”) as Wendy; Alexander Molony (“The Reluctant Landlord”) as Peter Pan; Molly Parker (“House of Cards”) as Mrs. Darling.
The movie also welcomes newcomers Joshua Pickering as John; Jacobi Jupe as Michael and Alyssa Wapanatâhk as Tiger Lily.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to redefine his iconic characters for a new generation,” said Lowery. “And even more excited that I get to do so with such an exceptional cast and crew.”
This is the second live-action Disney remake for director Lowery and producer Whitaker. The pair worked on 2016’s “Pete’s Dragon.” That remake has its fans, but doesn’t have the repeatability and child-like wonder of the original.
Will you follow the second star to the right and straight on ’til Disney+ to watch this live-action remake?
