The National Treasure movies starring Nicolas Cage as treasure-seeking historian Ben Gates and Diane Kruger as archivist Abigail, has a large fandom that’s been clamoring for a third move in the series since 2007 when the second film was released.
The movie producer behind the series, Jerry Bruckheimer, has good news for fans. He’s working on two new projects set in the National Treasure universe – a feature film and a TV series.
Talking with Collider, Bruckheimer shared that both a movie and a series are being worked on. “We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure title] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen,” he said. “Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active.”
The idea would be to bring back the original cast for a third film and spin off a TV series for Disney+ with a new younger cast but set in the same universe. The TV series would head to Disney+ first.
The Disney+ series already has a script and a treatment for the first season. The goal is to start filming as soon as lockdown restrictions and cast and crew safety will allow it.
The first two films earned a treasure chest worth more than $807 million for the Disney company and we’re sure there’s more gold buried in that cave.
The movie National Treasure was also just added to Disney+ last week. Maybe that’s a good sign.
