New Star Wars streaming series announced for Disney+

Lucasfilm has hired Emmy-nominated writer Leslye Headland (“Russian Doll”) to develop a new untitled “Star Wars” series for Disney+. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the series, which is already in development.

Variety broke the news of Headland’s work for Lucasfilm last month.

I am a big fan of “Russian Doll” with Natasha Lyonne. What starts as something of a mind-binder turned into a story with great emotional depth and some interesting questions about the value and meaning of life.

Headland’s production company has a deal with Fox 21 Television Studios, which is now part of the Disney family. Her writing and directing credits also include “Bachelorette” which starred Kirsten Dunst.

Other Star Wars series currently in the works at Disney+ include one based on Cassian Andor prior to the events of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and another following the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope.”

There is also a third season of the fan favorite The Mandalorian in the works, even before the second season has debuted.
