A visit to Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai’i

Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa is an oasis of magic on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu. The name “Aulani” traditionally means ‘messenger of a chief’ or ‘messenger of a greater authority.’ The name is fitting as the resort serves up authentic stories of Hawai’i’s spirit and culture along with the world class Disney experience.

Aulani Resort features both a DVC site and a regular resort hotel. There are seven-acres of pools and water adventures and a small collection of stores and restaurants on the ocean front property that was was used by the National Football League as a training site for the Pro Bowl.

Friend of the blog, Justice Mitchell, recently visited Aulani during the Christmas season and sent us some amazing photos of the resort.

An 80-year old local native Hawaiian craftsman helped construct the ceiling inside the main hall of ‘AMA‘AMA, which is made of real ‘ohia wood lashed together using traditional Hawaiian lashing technique that dates back centuries.

The center of the lobby features a 12×12-foot compass rose embedded in the floor. The four points of the compass do not point to the traditional North, South, East or West. Instead they correspond to directions the ancient Hawaiians relied upon – up is toward the sea, down points to the mountainside, the left arrow corresponds to the feminine side of the resort (made of lava with a smooth finish) and the right to the masculine side (made of lava with a rough finish).

In addition to the Disney added touches, Aulani has one of the largest private collections of contemporary Hawaiian art in the world.

Of course there’s the amazing ocean access. Perfect to relax on a lounge chair or go snorkeling in.

Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa offers guests of every age the Hawaiian vacation of their dreams. Inside the beautiful and relaxing surroundings, infused with the stories and surprises of Hawaii, discover the adventure, romance, tradition and fun of the islands.
