Hulu and Marvel Television are expanding their partnership with two new live-action series. Marvel’s Ghost Rider and Marvel’s Helstrom will join Marvel’s Runaways, which has just been renewed for a third season. This new “Spirits of Vengeance” content will help entertain Hulu’s growing subscriber base, which has now grown beyond 28 million monthly paid subscribers and another 50 million or so ad supported viewers.
The first of the two new shows for Hulu elevates the popular Ghost Rider character, also known as Robbie Reyes, from its attachment as a tertiary character in Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to it’s own series. The Spirit of Vengeance will return in 2020.
Ghost Rider is a quintessential antihero, consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Reyes lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields. Marvel’s Ghost Rider is executive produced by Ingrid Escajeda, who will serve as showrunner, Paul Zbyszewski and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb.
According to Variety Gabriel Luna, who played Robbie Reyes in the ABC Agents of Shield series, will return to the role for the Hulu show.
“I couldn’t be more excited and honored to be handed the reins to a Marvel character as beloved as Ghost Rider,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Ingrid Escajeda. This story hits every note for me—my love for grounded yet conflicted characters and my desire to scare the $&!# out of people! It’s important to me to find a take that thrills existing fans as well as wider audiences and I believe we’ve done just that.”
Marvel’s Helstrom will also debut on Hulu in 2020. The story focuses on Daimon and Ana Helstrom, the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the terrorizing worst of humanity — each with their attitude and skills. Marvel’s Helstrom is executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski, who will serve as showrunner and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb.
“We’re thrilled Hulu will be moving into a new—admittedly chilling—corner of the Marvel Universe with Ghost Rider and Helstrom. Paul and Ingrid are crafting gripping adventures into fear that live in our Spirits of Vengeance cornerstone,” said Marvel Television’s Joseph Loeb.
Both series are co-productions with Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios and join the upcoming season three of Marvel’s Runaways and recently announced adult animated series based on the popular Marvel Television characters including Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K, Marvel’s Hit-Monkey, Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show and Marvel’s Howard The Duck, which will culminate in a special event, Marvel’s The Offenders.
