Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer breakdown

The first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released at the panel for Episode nine at Star Wars Celebration. We were screaming at home. The entire audience was screaming and we’re sure you were screaming too.

Just in case you aren’t still screaming. Watch it again and then join us below for a breakdown of what we’ve spotted so far:

“We’ve passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.” Narration, presumably from ghost Jedi Luke, opens with Rey in a dessert with Luke’s lightsaber facing a new style tie-fighter and then leaping backward over it. Goose bumps.

We then see a spaceship cutting through clouds on approach to a city that appears built on top of a mountain.

Kylo Ren in full battle mode with Storm troopers nearby. Then a cut to a reassembled Kylo Ren helmet

Our first look at the new outfits for Finn and Poe Dameron. Finn appears to be holding Rey’s fighting stick on the same desert planet.

Roll-around droid BB-8 and his new pal D-O do the cute head tilting thing together. Ahhhh. Where ever they are, there’s a lot of junk in the background.

There’s Lando Calrissian piloting the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca. They’re going through a light speed jump and Lando is cackling with glee at a chance to be back at the controls of his ship. I’m sorry,Han Solo’s (RIP) ship. More goose bumps.

Back on the dessert planet Finn, Poe and C-3PO are aboard a skiff being chased by stormtroopers on hover bikes (hello “Return of the Jedi” anyone?). Poe says he can pilot anything. Let’s hope so.

Next is a close up on a pair of hands holding a gold medallion. Is this the same medal Princess Leia awarded to Han Solo way back in the first Star Wars? Very likely. Cue the tears!

Rey hugging General Leia Organa. Goose bumps on top of goose bumps and more tears.

Luke’s narration is back, “We’ll always be with you.”

Oh my, I love this shot of the gang (and D-O droid) together walking through a grassy hill. Poe Dameron looks like his wing has been clipped though. The camera turns and….

Luke tells us “No one is ever really gone…” (is that a hint?) as the ruins of the Death Star rise ahead followed by the distinctive cackle of Emperor Palpatine. We’re dead.

Cue title card: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

At some point the group is on a mission to recover something (some one?) from the ruins of the Death Star (is this version 1 or 2?). If it’s version 1, then this is a return to the moons of  Yavin. Could that be why Stephen Colbert made a point of explaining that Poe Dameron was born there during the panel discussion? It probably isn’t Endor (a gas giant), but it may be the Forest Moon of Endor (where Return of the Jedi ended). That scene doesn’t look very forested though. So I’m going with one of the moons of Yavin. The fourth moon, Yavin 4, was the hidden military base we see in Episode 4: A New Hope and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Either way, it’s a great call back to the ruins of the giant star destroyers at the beginning of The Force Awakens too. Almost like J.J. Abrams has been planning this all along. We love you JJ!

What do you think? Was that an amazing teaser trailer or what? What do you think of the episode title? Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments.
