“Captain Marvel” moves closer to $1 billion box office after strong weekend

Captain Marvel doesn’t give up. Despite serious competition at the box office, the movie now looks like it will safely make it to $1 billion at the global box office, a high mark for any film. With early box office estimates in for the third frame of Marvel Studios’ latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – “Captain Marvel” we can now count $910 million in the global till.

Domestically, Carol Danvers found out that she couldn’t avoid Jordan Peele’s “Us”, coming in second place with a still impressive $35.0M. Though this weekend, the Disney/Marvel movie has blasted off to a grand total of $321.5M in North America.

Internationally, Captain Marvel did a lot better staying number one in most markets, except China where it tell to second, and bringing in an additional $52.1M this weekend. It’s still performing very well in China as the 4th best MCU film to open there. The international box office now totals and impressive $588.8M.

This weekends total has moved Captain Marvel into the 10th spot domestically for Marvel Cinematic Universe passing “Iron Man” and putting “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” squarely in its crosshairs. Worldwide “Captain Marvel” is now ranked 7th, but it has a long way to go to catch “Captain America: Civil War.”
