There’s hope Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD might continue after its next season. After a season 5 finale that left some fan favorite characters dead or missing, the thought that the show might not get renewed left fans sad. ABC took pity on the show’s many fans and decided to renew the short for a sixth season, but with just half the usual episodes.
With a loyal audience and a nearly unlimited Marvel universe to play in, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has been one of ABC’s most interesting television shows. A renewal for more shows in 2019 was not a guarantee, but we no know the first episode will return in July of 2019.
These additional episodes are largely to give a bit of closure to some of the storylines that have developed and been left hanging. The shift to a summer schedule could give the show even more life after that.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the President of ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey revealed Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD could continue after the mini-season currently slated for summer 2019.
Agents of SHIELD “might be able to continue for longer” in its new summer 2019 time slot said Dungey. “It’s my hope that by moving it to summer, where our live-same-day ratings are less important, it might be able to continue for longer.”
Production for season 6 is already underway with Clark Gregg directing the premiere episode, titled “Missing Pieces.” Which we can hope reunites some of the missing pieces from the Agents of SHIELD team.
What do you think about the move to a summer season for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD? Would you like to see the show continue, even if it meant big changes to the cast?
That’s a double-edged sword! Of course I want more MAOS. But huge cast changes??? I don’t know.
I would LOVE to see SHIELD continue! It’s my #1 show of all time! I wouldn’t like the cast to change anymore though! It just wouldn’t be the same if the main characters weren’t there! THIS DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE RENEWED!! PLEASE reconsider your decision to cancel this show!
This is great news — I’m glad someone at the network is at least considering keeping the show going.
I’m not so thrilled about the move to summer; while I’m OK with a shorter season, I hate having to wait an entire year for new episodes. I’m afraid that this year-long gap will further erode the viewership, causing ratings to be even lower than they have been once it finally returns.
While I feel they’ll certainly be going to rescue the previously frozen Fitz from his space pod, I’m not so certain how the ultimate fate of Coulson will play out and if he’ll end up coming back or not. No matter what, though, it would be very nice if the series could do more to tie itself into the greater MCU. If the series had more connection to the various films — and more character crossover — I think the audience might be more willing to invest time in the TV series.
