Thor: Ragnarok, the third installment of the Thor movies hits theaters in about a month but, as always, Marvel is already looking into the future. So, where is the Marvel Cinematic Universe headed in the next few years? Great question!
Black Panther – February 16, 2018
What We Know So Far: The movie is directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed) and Chadwich Bosemen, Florence Kasumba, Andy Serkis, Martin Freeman and John Kani will all by reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War. Joining them are Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, and Forest Whitaker.
The official synopsis of the movie is: “After the events of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakanadan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.”
The first trailer for the movie was released a few months ago and I expect a another one to come with Thor: Ragnarok next month.
Avengers: Infinity War – May 4, 2018
What We Know So Far: Directed by the Russo brothers (Captain America: Winter Soldier and Civil War) and starring pretty much every superhero we’ve seen in the past ten years. This is the movie that all of Phase Two and Phase Three of the MCU movies have been leading to.
We don’t have a synopsis of the movie yet, but we know that the Avengers will have to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to fight Thanos as he tries to collect the Infinity Stones to put into the Infinity Gauntlet.
There’s also no trailer yet, though fans who went to the panel at D23 this past summer were treated to the first footage from the film. Marvel has released a first day of filming video where we get to see these actors and characters come together for the first time.
Ant-Man and the Wasp – July 6, 2018
What We Know So Far: Peyton Reed is returning as director and the original cast is also returning. Joining them are Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne among others.
We know very little about this movie except that it takes place after Civil War (duh) and it involves Ant-Man and Wasp going on a mission together (also duh). They are in the middle of filming now so hopefully we’ll get a trailer in the next couple of months.
Captain Marvel – March 8, 2019
What We Know So Far: Ana Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing and Brie Larson is starring. We also know that the movie will be set in the 90’s, Samuel L. Jackson will be reprising his role as Nick Fury and we will be introduced to the Skrulls, a shape-shifting alien species.
The Far Future
What We Know So Far: Avengers 4 is coming as well as a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel both tentatively in 2019 as well. We also know that James Gunn is working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which has a 2020 date attached to it right now. After that we have a couple of “Untitled Marvel Films” up through 2021 (feel free to speculate what they are in the comments).
Marvel has a lot on its plate right now and for the next few years. Which movie are you most looking forward to?
I find all these articles about Disney tv shows and movies so incredibly boring. Talk about the parks.
