Everyone wants to get a piece of the Marvel Pie. Hulu is joining the same pool already occupied by Netflix and ABC with its own Marvel superhero series. This one is based on the Runaways comic books and comes from Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage. Marvel and ABC Signature will also produce.
Marvel’s Runaways has a big fan following. It started in 2003 as part of Marvel Comics’ “Tsunami” imprint under the creative vision of Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The basic premise is that a group of teenagers discover their parents are part of an evil crime syndicate (and supervillains). Although they don’t like each other, they must unite against a common foe – their parents. Along the way the kids learn to use their own super powers and fight back.
Hulu has recently switched from offering free (with commercials) streaming to subscription streaming putting it in more direct competition with Netflix. It has ordered a few TV series already, and having a Marvel property in its lineup will be a strong addition.
Marvel Studios had previously considered a film featuring the Runaways, however, the project as shelved in favor of The Avengers series and other movies already in production.
Have you heard of The Runaways comic book series? Do you think it would make a good TV series?
just read the first published graphic novel( issues 1 -5?) and it seems pretty good. it would be interesting to see it made into a show/movie. wonder if its going to be live action or animated…
