With the Academy Awards in the books, I bet you thought awards season was over. But you’d be wrong. The 40th annual Saturn Awards nominations have just been released, and several Disney Pixar, and Marvel projects have received nods. The Saturn Awards are given out by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films and they recognize the year’s best efforts in those genres for movies, TV, and home entertainment.
Marvel’s Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World have received 5 nominations each. Both are nominated for Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture,
For IM3, Robert Downey, Jr is nominated for Best Actor, along with Ty Simpkins for Best Performance by a Younger Actor, Ben Kingsley for Best Supporting Actor, and Brian Tyler for Best Music.
Thor: TDW also received nods for Tom Hiddleston for Best Supporting Actor, along with Best Costume (Wendy Partridge), Best Make-Up (Karen Cohen, David White, Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou), and Best Special/Visual Effects (Jake Morrison, Paul Corbould, Mark Breakspear).
Disney and Pixar were also represented with nominations for Frozen, Oz: The Great and Powerful, Monsters University, The Lone Ranger, and Saving Mr. Banks.
Oz: The Great and Powerful is up for Best Fantasy Film, as well as Best Production Design (Robert Stromberg), Best Music (Danny Elfman), and Best Costume (Gary Jones).
Frozen is on the list with nods for Best Animated Film, and Best Writing (Jennifer Lee). Monsters University is also up for Best Animated Film.
The Lone Ranger received one nomination for Best Action/Adventure film, while Emma Thompson is nominated for Best Actress for Saving Mr. Banks.
On the TV side of the awards, ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is up for Best Network Television Series Release, and ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars is nominated for Best Youth-Oriented Television Series. ABC’s Once Upon a Time’s Jared Gilmore is also in the running for Best Performance By a Younger Actor in a Television Series.
