The Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland are in the middle of a six month refurbishment. While the outside of the snow-capped Matterhorn is covered in scaffolding Disney has taken a video camera inside to give fans a view of the new ride vehicles, a bit of history, and some of the best video of the infamous basketball court built inside the mountain shell.
The Matterhorn holds a special place in my heart as it was one of the first attractions my Grandfather Vic Greene got to work on as art director for WED Imagineering. The room that houses the ‘quarter court’ and a basketball hoop was mostly used as a breakroom for the Alpine Climbers that used to go up and down the Matterhorn during the day. The original hoop wasn’t much more than a metal loop, looks like they’ve upgrade a couple times since then.
What do you think? Has the rumor finally been confirmed now?
This has always been one of my favorite Disney stories. There is something very cool about a basketball court being inside the matterhorn!
