A few weeks ago I heard a rumor that the dog kennels at the Walt Disney World parks would be closing. A few days later someone posted that a cast member at the kennels was told they would be closing as well. That didn’t make sense to me as what would guests on the Disney property do with their pets. Many guests travel with their pets as they’re on the road for long periods of time. The nearest non-Disney kennel is a good 20 minutes away from Disney property and it will be closing in a year or so (I have inside information on that).
Today we got our answer to this conundrum. Disney is letting another company take over the pet-care business.
Best Friends Pet Care Inc. has signed an agreement to build and operate
a full-service, luxury pet "resort" at Walt Disney World Resort. The
one-of-a-kind facility will cater to park and resort guests as well as
Walt Disney World employees, providing a full range of pet hospitality
services including dog and cat boarding, day care and grooming
services, and doggy day camp.
The ‘state of the art’ facility will open in mid 2009. In the meantime Best Friends Pet Care will take over operations of the five existing pet kennels at the Walt Disney World parks and resorts (all four parks and Fort Wilderness). Disney always provided good service, a clean location, and cheerful employees at a reasonable rate. But there was nothing special about the kennels. I’m hoping that Best Friends can maintain the same level of great guest service (and pet service) while also improving the conditions for the animals who are stuck there while their owners play.
Now if we can just get Disney to add a car-wash option to their parking lots. Who wouldn’t pay a little extra for a premium spot (or Valet service) and get a car wash at the same time.
